After servicing the Riverland & Mallee for nearly 20 years, the 3G mobile network will switch off today.

Telstra & Optus will flick the off switch today, which was scheduled originally to take place earlier this year.

Concerns raised saw the network extend the switch-off timeline, however there’s still some concern that locals may have devices connected to the network but might be aware.

It’s said the switch-off will allow greater capacity for both the 4G & 5G networks.

Minister for Communications, Michelle Rowland said “The 3G switchover is a commercial decision taken by network providers and industry has undertaken significant efforts to identify and contact potentially affected customers and encourage them to check and upgrade their device.”

Minister Rowland added further her department will continue to work with the telcos during the 3G switchover process to ensure this occurs in a safe and well managed way.
