Photo may reveal identity of Tas bones

A photograph taken from a camera found on a dead man in a remote Tasmanian forest may be the key to identifying him.

Tasmania Police released a photograph extracted from an SD card found in the man's backpack, and they believe the shot may have been taken in New Zealand in 2010.

"Among the images forensically extracted from the SD card is a photo of a man standing in front of the foreshore, which is possibly the deceased person," Detective Acting Sergeant Michael Manning said on Friday.

Two hikers stumbled across the bones in Huon Valley bushland on Sunday, about 10km west of the popular Tahune Airwalk.

The bones, found away from marked tracks, likely belong to a man and could have been there for six years, police say.

A backpack was found nearby containing food, clothing, Swiss Francs and Hong Kong dollars, with receipts for a money exchange in Switzerland in December 2010.

Det Sgt Manning said it appeared the man wasn't prepared for an overnight stay.

Paperwork found in the backpack indicates he may have been staying in Western Australia.
